Miscanthus Cellulose Nano Crystals (CNCs)
Cellulose Nano Crystals (CNCs) exist naturally in all plants and, once extracted, are additives that improve the properties of existing products. These improvements include making products stronger, lighter, less permeable, more viscous, more miscible, as well as several other effects. Although CNCs are 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, the large aspect ratio (length vs. width) and the interactions between the particles determines their impact on the products to which they are added.
Miscanthus CNCs have the largest aspect ratio of any known plant based CNC at 50 -70 which is 2 to 3 times the aspect ratio of wood CNCs. This makes Miscanthus CNCs more effective and provides a basis for greatly expanding the use of CNCs within multiple products and industries.
Aloterra has the exclusive patent rights to a highly efficient process for producing Miscanthus CNCs and has partnered with Argonne National Lab (ANL), Case Western Reserve University, and University of Chicago to rapidly scale and commercialize the process.
